Kundservice på IOT Data Sverige ++++

Simon Eisner ger exempel på hur ett kundservice ärende ser ut på IOT Data Sverige.

Customer service att IOT Data Sverige (Svenska/Engelska)

CUSTOMER: I have noticed that it works to send mobile data independent on what APN we use. I can for example set the APN to "internet" and it works just fine. Or just any string.

Do you have any comments on that? Is maybe APN something that no longer is used by the operators?

IOT DATA SVERIGE: We recommend using the assigned APN for IOT purposes,  as you might not get access to specific IOT services such as e-DRX, PSM, VOLTE or other similar products.

For national use the SIMs will however connect to the Tele2 base stations,  who will recognize SIM and add a general internet setting and allow SIM to connect to basic internet access.  If the SIM is operating outside Sweden without correct APN it will not be recognized by the base stations and will not be able to connect.  The national connection without APN would also cause a slight delay while base station adds general access that would cause some extra battery drain.

So yes,  you are correct in seeing national connectivity working without setting APN or using Internet,  as the base station will figure this out.

Customer: Thanks for your fast and detailed answer!

IOT DATA SVERIGE: Happy to be of assistance.

CUSTOMER: A Smartphone manage to roam without a manual APN entered. I assume it gets the configuration at first connection to the home network.

Would you say this is also how more simple hardware works like a tracker? If the first network is done to the Tele2 home networks The tracker gets enough configuration to be able to roam?

Or in other words - if connected to the home network first - the APN will be downloaded from the network.

What is that standard called?

IOT DATA SVERIGE:  There is a difference between consumer products as a smartphone and most IOT products as a tracker.  A smartphone would either download APN from home network or it would probably also be preconfigured with a list of worldwide operators and set accordingly when SIM is inserted and first connection is made.

Depending on «smartness» of IOT device it could in theory connect to home network using default APN and then receive correct APN via push/OTA message,  but we rarely see this advanced function in trackers.  So in our experience,  IOT devices will work in home network,  without some specific IOT functions,  but will fail when trying to roam abroad.  There is also a layer of security added to the IOT connectivity running on IOT APNs compared to «regular» internet connectivity used by phones.

CUSTOMER: Thanks!
